Many events that have a Source attribute of Microsoft-Windows-SpoolerWin32SPL and an event ID of 4 are logged in Windows Vista SP1 and in Windows Server 2008

On a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008, many events that have the following characteristics are logged in the System log:
  • Source: Microsoft-Windows-SpoolerWin32SPL
  • Event ID: 4
The following is a sample event:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-SpoolerWin32SPL
Date: <Date>
Event ID: 4
Task Category: None
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: <ComputerName>
The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key S-1-5-18\Printers\Connections. The print spooler could not open the registry key. This can occur if the registry key is corrupt or missing, or if the registry recently became unavailable.

This problem occurs because the Printer Spooler service incorrectly logs these events when the SYSTEM account accesses the WMI Win32_Printer class.
