Error 4 is returned when you synchronize a supported list of contact properties by using Exchange ActiveSync in Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Symptoms
Exchange ActiveSync enables licensees to support a subset of contact properties. This feature enables the client to send a supported list of properties on the first synchronization. This list is used by the server to determine which properties are deleted.

However, this feature is broken on Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The Exchange server returns a status code "4" as a protocol error.
Cause
A necessary class tag is removed from Exchange Server 2007 SP1.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, install Update Rollup 9 for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1. For more information about Update Rollup 9 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1, see the following Exchange Help topic: For more information about how to obtain the latest Exchange service pack or update rollup, see the following Exchange Help topic:
More information
To use the supported attributes, the client sends a request that resembles the following:
     <Supported> <xxxxxx> </Supported>

When this problem occurs, the response from the server resembles the following:
<Status>4</Status>
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
