Error when you try to recursively delete a directory structure on an NFS share that is exported by a Windows Server 2008-based computer: "Permission denied"

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Server 2008-based computer that has the Server for Network File System (NFS) component installed.
  • This computer exports NFS shares to UNIX-based or Linux-based NFS clients.
When an NFS client tries to recursively delete a directory structure on one of the NFS shares in this scenario, a "permission denied" error is returned for some of the directories. Therefore, the NFS client cannot delete the whole directory structure.

However, the NFS client can delete these files and directories if the client retries the deletion attempt multiple times after a small delay between each attempt.
This problem occurs because of an error in the Server for NFS driver. Because of this error, the file server returns an incorrect access bit.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be running Windows Server 2008. Also, the computer must have the Server for NFS component installed.

More information
Important This hotfix resolves the issue in which the "permission denied" error is returned for directories only and not for the files. If this error is returned on files in the directory tree, additional troubleshooting may be required.
