This article describes how to disable the automatic formatting in Outline View in a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document.

When you view a Word 2007 document in an outline by clicking Outline on the View tab, the paragraphs in the document are automatically outlined to Level 1. This behavior is by design in Word 2007.
If you want to disable this behavior, install the Word 2007 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009, and then configure the DisableAutoFormatInNavPane registry entry to enable the hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:

Configure the DisableAutoFormatInNavPane registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor.
In Windows Vista, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
