Zoo Tycoon 2 does not start or you receive an error message: "Another instance of startup.exe is already running"

SYMPTOMS
When you try to start Microsoft Zoo Tycoon 2, you may experience one of the following problems:

Problem 1

You receive the following error message:
Another instance of startup.exe is already running.
Problem 2

When you try to start Zoo Tycoon 2 by double-clicking the program's shortcut icon, the startup screen for Zoo Tycoon 2 does not appear, and the program does not start.
RESOLUTION
To resolve the problem, use the following method that is appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Stop the instance of Startup.exe that is already running

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Task Manager.
    • In Windows Vista, click Start Start button, type taskmgr in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the Processes tab, click startup.exe in the Image Name column, and then click End Process. Click End Process again if you are prompted to end the process.
  3. Click Close to close Task Manager.
  4. Again try to start Zoo Tycoon 2.
If you continue to experience Problem 1 of the "Symptoms" section, use Method 2 to change the program's shortcut icon.

Method 2: Change the shortcut icon for Zoo Tycoon 2

To do this, follow these steps.

Windows Vista
Note If you have a Zoo Tycoon 2 shortcut icon on your Desktop, go to step 5. If you do not have a Zoo Tycoon 2 shortcut icon on your Desktop, instead start at step 1.
  1. Right-click StartStart button, and then click Open.
  2. Click the book icon in the Open box, type the following path, and then press ENTER:
    drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games
    Note The drive placeholder represents the drive where Zoo Tycoon 2 is installed. For example, if Zoo Tycoon 2 is installed on drive C, type C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games.
  3. In the Folders column, click the folder for the version of Zoo Tycoon that you want to start.
  4. In the Name column, right-click Startup.exe, and then click Create Shortcut. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
    Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the Desktop instead?
  5. Right-click the Zoo Tycoon shortcut on your Desktop, and then click Properties.
  6. In the Target box, change the file name "startup.exe" to zt.exe. Do not delete the quotation marks in the path. The revised path in the Target box should resemble the following path:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Zoo Tycoon 2\zt.exe"
  7. Click OK.
  8. Try to start Zoo Tycoon 2 by using the new Zoo Tycoon 2 shortcut icon on your Desktop.
Windows XP
  1. Right-click the Zoo Tycoon 2 shortcut icon on your Desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Shortcut tab.
  3. In the Target box, change the file name "startup.exe" to zt.exe. Do not delete the quotation marks in the path. The revised path in the Target box should resemble the following path:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Zoo Tycoon 2\zt.exe"
  4. Click OK.
  5. Try to start Zoo Tycoon 2 by using the Zoo Tycoon 2 shortcut icon on your Desktop.
