Tape library changer devices may fail to get automatically configured by the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) service in Windows Server 2003. This can occur when the device is connected via Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Fibre Channel. The library changer device and any associated tape drives will be present in Device Manager however.
The RSM service will only configure a tape library changer device if it finds one or more tape drives associated with it. To associate a tape drive with a library, RSM will use one of two methods. The first method relies on the Device ID (DVCID) or serial number. The second method uses SCSI bus, LUN, and Target ID addressing. In order for RSM to associate a tape drive with a library changer attached via SAS or Fibre Channel, the device and associated driver must support the DVCID method and provide a serial number.
If you find that your changer is not present, please check with the manufacture for an updated driver that supports the DVCID method.
