Single Instance Storage (SIS) is used to save storage space by replacing identical files with a single copy of the same file in a common store, and setting link files that point to the file. This feature may be leveraged by other authenticated users that have been given permissions to another folder on the same volume. An authenticated user might be able to reproduce a document and determine if the document exists on the sensitive folder. Some examples include forms that the authenticated user has full knowledge of the format and composition of the form or a document that might have one piece of data that is unique between all of the forms, such as Social Security Numbers, employee identifications, or credit card numbers. For this reason, administrators should take care to not share out other folders on volumes that include sensitive information where large parts of the document are otherwise well known.
