You receive "out of memory" error messages when Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint scans files. Additionally, the following hexadecimal code is logged in the HRLog.txt file:
The "Out of memory" error occurs because either there is a memory leak that has consumed all memory or the file that Forefront Security for SharePoint tries to scan is too big.
If a scanning process encounters an "Out of memory" error when it scans a document, Forefront Security for SharePoint versions that are earlier than Service Pack 3 return this error and continue. Because the next scan request uses the same process, an "Out of memory" error is likely to occur.
To resolve this issue, install Forefront Security for SharePoint Service Pack 3 (SP3). For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
967995 Description of Forefront Security for SharePoint with Service Pack 3
Forefront for SharePoint with SP3 restarts the scanning process after an "Out of memory" error.
If there is a memory leak, the new scan should succeed if you are running SP3. Additionally, future scans will have a larger chance of succeeding because the new scan recovers any previously leaked memory.
If the item is too big, the error will be returned on the retry scan, and the file will be blocked because of the error.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
