Considering the following scenario:
  1. You install Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 4.5 on a computer that is running Windows XP.
  2. You install more than one application by using MSI with the Per-User option. For example, you run the following command to install a MSI package named application.msi:

    MSIexec.exe /i application.msi ALLUSERS=""
In this scenario, when you run a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) query against the "Win32_Product" class to obtain a list of installed applications, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Number: 0x80041001
Facility: WMI
Description: Generic failure
After you dismiss the error, the list of installed applications is not obtained.

Note This problem does not occur to Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.
