Symbol files (PDBs) are not updated after you install update 971090 or 973830 for Visual Studio 2005 SP1, or update 971089 for Visual Studio .NET 2003 SP1

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Symptoms
Some symbol files (PDBs), such as atl80.pdb, atl71.pdb, or atl70.pdb, may not be updated after you install one of the following updates:
  • Update 971090 for Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
  • Update 973830 for Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
  • Update 971089 for Visual Studio .NET 2003 Service Pack 1
Workaround
To work around this issue, you can download the symbol files from the Microsoft Symbol Server. To use the Microsoft Symbol Server, you have to use the appropriate syntax in your symbol path. Typically, the syntax path uses the following format:
SRV*your local symbol folder*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
Note your local symbol folder is any drive or share that is used as a symbol destination.

For example, to set the symbol path in the WinDbg debugger, type the following command in the Command Prompt window of the debugger:
.sympath SRV*f:\localsymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
