Unread messages are marked as "read" when Exchange Server 2007 processes the EXAMINE command
Consider the following scenario:
- You use an application to connect to a mailbox through the IMAP4 protocol.
- You use the Examine command to access folders.
In this scenario, the mailbox is accessed in read-only mode and changes to the state of the inbox cannot be made. Therefore, the unread messages that are synchronized to the application are still marked as “unread." However, the synchronized messages are marked as “read” although the messages were not read if you use the application to connect to a mailbox that is located on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 server.
This problem occurs because Exchange Server 2007 sets a wrong flag for messages when it processes the EXAMINE command.
To resolve this problem, install the following update rollup:
972076 Description of Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
