Symbol files (PDBs) are deleted from the Windows System folder after you uninstall update 971090 or update 973830 for Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Symptoms
After you uninstall update 971090 or update 973830 for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1, some symbol files (PDBs), such as atl80.pdb or mfc80.pdb, are deleted from the Windows System folder.
Workaround
To work around this issue, you can download the symbol files from the Microsoft Symbol Server. To use the Microsoft Symbol Server, you have to use the appropriate syntax in your symbol path. Typically, the syntax path uses the following format:
SRV* your local symbol folder *http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
Note The your local symbol folder placeholder represents any drive or share that is used as a symbol destination.

For example, to set the symbol path in the WinDbg debugger, type the following command at the command prompt in the debugger:
.sympath SRV*f:\localsymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
