Favorites may not show up in the Internet Explorer 8 address bar after upgrading to Windows 7

Symptom
After upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7, Internet Explorer 8 does not show favorites in the address bar. This only happens if the machine did not have Internet Explorer 8 installed before upgrading to Windows 7.
Cause
This problem is caused by a bug in the Microsoft Products listed in the Applies-To section.
Resolution


To resolve the problem, use the following steps:
  1. Click Start -> Run and type "regedit".
  2. Expand "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT".
  3. Expand ".URL".
  4. Change the value of "PersistantHandler" to "{8CD34779-9F10-4f9b-ADFB-B3FAEABDAB5A}".
  5. Start Internet Explorer.
  6. Click Tools -> Options.
  7. Select the "Content" tab.
  8. Click AutoComplete Settings.
  9. Uncheck "Use Windows Search for better results".
  10. Restart Internet Explorer.
  11. Return to AutoComplete settings.
  12. Check "Use Windows Search for better results".
  13. Restart Internet Explorer.
