Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You try to install Active Directory Domain Services on a new member server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 in a child domain.

  • The DNS communication and LDAP communication is blocked between the new member server that is in the child domain and the forest root domain.

For example, the child domain is located in a perimeter network (also known as DMZ, demilitarized zone, and screened subnet) and the forest root domain controllers are located in a secure location.

In this scenario, you cannot install Active Directory Domain Services and receive the following error message:

An Active Directory domain controller for the domain <domain name> could not be contacted.

Ensure that the DNS domain name is typed correctly.

If the name is correct, then click Details for troubleshooting information.

Cause

The user interface (UI) for installing Active Directory Domain Services incorrectly tries to contact a forest root domain controller to build a forest domain structure. However, the UI for installing Active Directory Domain Services can retrieve this information from any domain controller.

To locate a domain controller in the forest root domain, the member server must communicate with the intended domain controller (DC) by using DNS communication and LDAP communication. However, such communication fails in a perimeter network and in a restricted branch office because some related ports are disabled for security. Therefore, this behavior prevents the installation of Active Directory Domain Services.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, install this hotfix before you install Active Directory Domain Services. After you install this hotfix, the UI for installing Active Directory Domain Services contacts the replication target domain controller to build a forest domain structure.
