A 32-bit Removable Storage application does not load on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 or of Windows Vista

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a 32-bit application that calls the Removable Storage functions from the NtmsApi.dll module.
  • You try to run this application on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 or of Windows Vista.
In this scenario, you cannot load the application, or the application crashes.

Note You can load the application successfully on a computer that is running an x86-based version of Windows Server 2008 or of Windows Vista.

Note for developers

When you debug the scenario in which the application crashes, you find that the cause of the crash is that the 32-bit application tries to load a 64-bit version of the ntmsapi.dll module. This behavior occurs because Windows Server 2008 does not include a 32-bit version of the ntmsapi.dll module. If you had previously installed the hotfix for the KB article 971278 to fix this problem, you may find the UpdateNtmsOmidInfo function returns the status code 8. This hotfix resolves that issue.
The 32-bit Ntmsapi.dll module does not exist in the SysWOW64 folder of the 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 and of Windows Vista.
