SYMPTOMS
The Windows SharePoint Services Search service does not start when the fully qualified domain names of the server are used to configure a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 single server installation. In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Could not access the Search service configuration database.
Additionally, you see the following error message in the Application log:
Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3 Search Event Category: Gatherer  Event ID: 10034Description: Could not access the Search service configuration database.Context: Application 'a4d3090f-d8fb-4e5a-91e4-39282630dba6'Details:  The filename or extension is too long.   (0x800700ce)
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, apply the following updates:
  • 975002 Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Cumulative Update Server Hotfix Package (Sts-x-none.msp): October 27, 2009
  • 975731 Description of the SharePoint Server 2007 Cumulative Update Server Hotfix Package (Coreserver-x-none.msp): October 27, 2009
