Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • In a network environment, you manage a file server that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You use Distributed File System (DFS) Replication to back up files from an upstream server to a downstream server.

  • You move or rename some folders or some files on the upstream server after you stop the DFS Replication service.

In this scenario, these folders or files on the upstream server are deleted because of name conflicts with the downstream server when you restart the DFS Replication service.

For example, assume that you create the following folders on the upstream server in the network environment:

  • CSROOT\FolderY

  • CSROOT\FolderY\FolderY

Then, assume that you perform the following actions on the upstream server after you stop the DFS Replication service:

  1. Rename CSROOT\FolderY to CSROOT\FolderZ.

  2. Move CSROOT\FolderZ\FolderY to CSROOT\FolderY.

  3. Delete CSROOT\FolderZ.

In this scenario, you find that the move operation or that the rename operation is not replicated to the downstream server after you start the DFS Replication service again. Additionally, the files under the FolderY folder are deleted on the upstream server when DFS Replication runs a conflict resolution algorithm on the downstream server.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a logic error in DFS Replication update installation.

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxx version number.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
