FIX: "Invalid LPI" messages are logged in the Application log when you configure 3270 print session to use a PDT file in Host Integration Server

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
In a Microsoft Host Integration Server 2009 environment, you configure a 3270 print session to use a Printer Definition Table (PDT) file. For each print job that contains a PDF file that does not have the "Printer language is HP PCL” option enabled, an error message that resemble the following is logged in the Application log:

Event ID: 5
Source: SNA Virtual Print Driver
Description: Invalid LPI.
Print Session: Print Session Name.
Printer: Printer Name.

Because of this problem, computers that receive many print jobs have a corresponding number of entries logged in the Application log.

Note This issue occurs in all versions of Host Integration Server. However, this hotfix applies only to Host Integration Server 2009.

To work around this issue, on the print session properties windows, Job Format tab, select the "Printer Language is HP PCL" option. This enables the SNAPRINT service to send the correct LPI (Lines Per Inch) down to the printer by using the LPI that is defined in the Page Layout tab.

Note This only works for printers that understand PCL 2 or later versions.
After you apply this hotfix, add the following registry key to suppress the logging of the Event ID 5:

Name: SuppressVPEventID5
Type: REG_SZ
Value: TRUE
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
