You cannot run a TS RemoteApp application in Windows XP SP2

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.
Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • You have an .rdp file that was created on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and that has the Terminal Server role installed.
  • You use this .rdp file to try to run a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services RemoteApp (TS RemoteApp) application on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
In this scenario, the TS RemoteApp may not run.
Cause
This problem occurs because Transport Layer Security (TLS) must be configured to use server authentication on both the terminal server and on the client that is running Windows XP SP2.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Enable TLS authentication on both the terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008 and on clients that are running Windows XP SP2.
  • Click to clear the Require Server Authentication check box when you re-create the .rdp file.
More information
This problem does not occur when the .rdp file is created on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and that has the Terminal Server role installed. This problem does not occur because of a known problem that prevented the Require Server Authentication option from being enabled.
