"These media files could not be compressed" error when you try to compress or optimize a media file in a PowerPoint 2013 or PowerPoint 2010 presentation

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • In a Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 or PowerPoint 2010 presentation, you insert a .wav file.
  • On the File tab, you click Info, and then you click one of the following options:
    • Optimize Compatibility
    • Compress Media

However, when the process to compress or optimize the .wav file is finished, you receive one of the following error messages in the Optimize Media Compatibility window or in the Compress Media window.

If no files were successfully resampled, you receive the following error message:
These media files could not be compressed.

If some files were successfully resampled, but other files were not successfully resampled, you receive the following error message:
Some media files could not be compressed.

Additionally, in the Optimize Media Compatibility window or in the Compress Media window, Unsupported is displayed in the Status column.
Cause
This issue occurs because certain .wav files that have a high bit rate cannot be compressed or optimized.
Workaround
To work around this issue, use a third-party program to convert the audio file to an .mp3 file or to a lower bit-rate .wav file.
