About inserting and playing online videos in Word

You can insert an online video in a Word document. To insert and to play the video, you must be connected to the internet. For how-to information, see Insert an online video in Word.

Supported online-video sites

You can insert and play online videos from these sites:

Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer 11 is required on your computer

For Windows 10 versions 1903 and newer, Microsoft Edge is required to be on your computer. For Windows 10 versions older than 1903 (and prior versions of Windows such as 7 and 8.x), Internet Explorer 11 is required to be on your computer.

You don't have to use that browser when you explore the web; you simply have to have it installed, because behind the scenes, Word needs its technology to play videos on Windows.

Administrators can turn off the ability to play online videos

If you’re an admin and use Group Policy in your organization, you can use a policy setting to prevent users from playing online videos in Word. This policy setting is named Allow Online Videos to play with Word and can be found in the Group Policy Management tool under User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Microsoft Word 2016\Word Options\General.

To use this policy setting, download the latest Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) from the Microsoft Download Center. You can also use the Office cloud policy service to apply this policy setting.

If you organization is using Word 2016, the March 5, 2019 update for Word is required in order to make use of the Group Policy setting.
