You can control whether you want to make Lync audio and video calls and share meeting content by using VoIP only, VoIP over Wi-Fi only, or by using your cellular data connection when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi. You can also require a Wi-Fi connection for video and meeting content.

To view or change your data use settings:

  • Tap More (…) at the bottom of the Lync screen, and then tap settings. Tap the setting you want to change.

Here are the possible settings, default values, and their significance:

Data use type

What it means

Voice Settings > VoIP always

Note: This setting is only available if you have Windows Phone 8.1 installed and if your organization has Enterprise Voice configured. If you have Windows Phone 8.1 and Enterprise Voice, then this is the default Voice setting.

When you're connected to a Wi-Fi network, Lync will first try to use Wi-Fi for incoming and outgoing Lync calls. If a Wi-Fi network is not available, Lync will use your cellular data for incoming and outgoing Lync calls.

Voice Settings > VoIP over Wi-Fi only

Lync will never use your data plan for incoming or outgoing Lync calls. Call forwarding will be set to Simultaneously ring your mobile number. This makes sure that you can still receive work calls when you're not connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Note: If you disable the Simultaneously ring option after selecting this option (VoIP over Wi-Fi only), you will not receive Lync calls over your mobile number when you are not connected to Wi-Fi.

Voice Settings > Cellular

When you make or receive a Lync call, Lync will call you back at the mobile number you specified. Video will not be available in this scenario. When you make a Lync call, this method will use Wi-Fi data (or cellular data, if Wi-Fi is not available) to establish the connection to the Lync Servers, then will use your mobile voice plan minutes for the duration of the call. When you select this option, your Call Forwarding settings will also be set to Simultaneously ring your mobile number. Simultaneously ring allows Lync to call you back at your mobile number.

Caution: If you disable the Simultaneously ring option after selecting this option (Cellular), you will not receive Lync calls over your mobile number regardless of whether you have a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.

Note: If you use Lync on your Windows Phone but don't log in, you can still join meetings but you will be anonymous and the call will not be made using a cellular connection.

Require Wi-Fi for Video

This setting is On by default.

Lync will use only Wi-Fi to make Lync video calls. It will never use your cellular data connection to send or receive video.

If you set this option to OFF, Lync will use your cellular data connection to send and receive video when you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to Wi-Fi, Lync tries to use the Wi-Fi network for video instead. Video isn’t available for calls connected via your mobile number over the cellular voice network.

Require Wi-Fi for Content

This setting is On by default.

Lync will use only Wi-Fi to receive meeting content. It won’t use your cellular data connection to receive meeting content.

If you set this option to OFF, Lync will use your cellular data connection to allow you to receive meeting content when you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to Wi-Fi, Lync will try to use the Wi-Fi network to receive meeting content instead.
