Field codes: Time field

The Time field inserts the current time in your document. Unless you specify a date-time picture switch, the time is displayed in the format specified as part of the regional settings in Microsoft Windows Control Panel.

Note: When you use the Date and Time command (Header & Footer Tools Design tab) and select the Update automatically check box, Word inserts a TIME field. Depending on the format you select, Word uses a date-time picture switch to display the current time or date or both. For example, if you select "10/12/95 10:11 AM" in the Date and Time dialog box, Word inserts the field { TIME \@ "MM/dd/yy h:mm AM/PM" }.

When you view the Time field in your document, the syntax looks like this:

{ TIME [\@ "Date-Time Picture"] }

Note:  A field code tells the field what to show. Field results are what’s shown in the document after having evaluated the field code. To toggle between viewing the field code and the field code results, press Alt+F9.

\@ "Date-Time Picture"

Specifies a date and time format other than the default. If you select a format in the Field dialog box (Field command, Insert menu), Word inserts a corresponding date-time picture switch.

To use a format that's not shown in the Field dialog box, click Field Codes and type the format switch directly in the Field code box.

{ TIME } results in 11:11 AM (or the default time format specified as part of the regional settings in Windows Control Panel).

{ TIME \@ "h am/pm" } results in 11 AM.
