In Communities in Teams, you can leave a community that you joined. After you leave, you will no longer be able to post or export your content and the community will be removed from your list.

Note: For community owners, leaving a community is only available on Android and iOS. 

Community members can leave the community at any time. If you are an owner, you cannot leave the community until you promote someone else to be the owner. To delete a community or channel, you must be an owner.

Leave a community

  1. Tap the Home tab in the Teams app.

  2. Tap the community you would like to leave.

  3. Tap the community name at the top of the screen.

  4. Tap Leave or Leave community at the bottom of the screen. In the confirmation window you will be advised that you will no longer be able to post or export your content. Tap Export content if you wish, then tap Leave.

  5. After you leave, the community will be removed from your list.

Delete a community or channel

To completely delete a community or channel, you have to be an owner.

Before you start

Make sure to review these items before deciding to delete a community or channel you own.

  • If you delete your community or channel, it's not possible to restore it.

  • If you delete your community or channel, members don't receive a notification or alert about the deletion.

  • If you delete your community or channel, members lose access to the data. They won't be able to export or delete the data from the privacy export portal.

  • If you are the only community owner and delete your Microsoft account, the community will no longer have an owner. The community and channel will get deleted, and members will lose access to the data without notification.

  • If your community and channel is deleted for violation of terms, you'll receive a notification.

Delete a community you own

  1. Tap the Home tab in the Teams app.

  2. Tap the community you want to delete.

  3. Tap the community name at the top of the screen.

  4. Tap Delete community  Teams delete message button.

  5. Tap Delete community to delete the community or Cancel to exit without submitting any changes. Tap Export content to export your data before you delete your community.

Delete a channel you own

  1. Tap the Home tab in the Teams app.

  2. Tap the channel you want to delete.

  3. Tap More options  Three vertical dots. at the top of the screen.

  4. Select Delete channel  Teams delete message button.

  5. Select Delete channel to delete the channel or Cancel to exit without submitting any changes. Tap Export content to export your data before you delete your community.

Community members can leave the community at any time. If you are an owner, you cannot leave the community until you promote someone else to be the owner. To delete a community, you must be an owner.

Leave a community

If you are a community member and want to leave a community, follow these steps:

  1. In Teams, select Community from the app bar on the left side of the screen.

  2. Select the community you would like to leave.

  3. Select More options  Teams settings and more button on the right side of the community name.

  4. Select Leave community  Teams leave chat icon

  5. You can do the following:

Delete a channel you own

  1. In Teams, select Community from the app bar on the left side of the screen.

  2. Select the channel you want to delete.

  3. Select More options  Teams settings and more button on the right side of the channel name.

  4. Select Delete channel  Teams delete message button.

  5. Select Delete to delete the channel or Cancel to exit without submitting any changes. Before you delete your channel, learn how export or delete your Microsoft Teams (free) data.
