Premium features in Outlook.com have changed

As of February 28, 2021, the specific "Outlook.com Premium" and "Ad-Free Outlook.com" subscriptions no longer include the ability to use a custom domain with Outlook.com.

To continue using a personalized email address and custom domains with Outlook.com, you will need to subscribe to Microsoft 365. Learn more about Premium features in Outlook.com for Microsoft 365 subscribers.

What do I need to do?

The steps you need to take depend on whether you received a free custom domain from Microsoft or you purchased a domain on your own, directly from a domain registrar. Select one of the two options below to continue:

If you received a domain from Microsoft through Outlook.com Premium, you'll need to take ownership of that domain and transfer it away from Microsoft. We've partnered with GoDaddy for this process.

  1. Sign in to the  Outlook.com premium iconpremium features section of Outlook.com.

  2. Select the Transfer your domain tab.

  3. Under Step 1, select Unlock to perform the transfer. You may receive an email from Outlook asking you to verify your email address. If you do, select Confirm your email address in that message.

  4. Under Step 2, select Transfer to visit GoDaddy’s transfer webpage to complete the transfer. If requested, provide the authorization code from the Transfer your domain tab.

  5. Complete the purchase of your domain transfer with GoDaddy. This will initiate the transfer. You will be responsible for paying the cost of your domain renewal with GoDaddy going forward.

  6. You might see an option to migrate your email over to your new domain registrar. Decline this option if you want to continue using your domain with Outlook after you complete the transfer.

  7. The transfer can take up to seven days to complete. You should receive a confirmation email from Outlook.com Premium letting you know that the transfer is in progress. GoDaddy will email you once the process is complete.

  8. Buy a Microsoft 365 subscription before your current Outlook.com Premium subscription renewal or expiration date

Note: Office 365 is now Microsoft 365. If you’re already an Office 365 subscriber, you don’t need to do anything to start enjoying Microsoft 365. Learn more

Once these steps are completed, you will be able to manage your domain by going to the Personalized email address tab in the  Outlook.com premium iconpremium features section of Outlook.com. Your personalized email address will continue working after February 2021.

If you remove your domain from Outlook for any reason, you can reconnect your domain by following the steps listed in Get a personalized email address in Microsoft 365.

If you own the domain you used to setup your personalized email address in Outlook.com Premium and it was not given to you by Microsoft, then you will only need to purchase Microsoft 365 to continue using that personalized email address.

Once you purchase Microsoft 365, you will be able to manage your domain by going to the  Outlook.com premium iconpremium features section of Outlook.com settings

Note: Note: Your personalized email address will continue working properly because the correct DNS settings are already configured with your current domain registrar. If those DNS settings are cleared or you remove your domain from Outlook, you will need to transfer your domain to GoDaddy before reconnecting your domain to Outlook. GoDaddy is the only officially supported partner for personalized email addresses in Outlook with Microsoft 365.

Frequently asked questions

It is no longer possible to manage your personalized email address through the Outlook.com Premium portal. If you purchase a Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and follow the appropriate steps listed above, you will be able to manage your domain by going to the  Outlook.com premium iconpremium features section of Outlook.com settings

Yes. The following features of Outlook.com Premium aren't supported in Microsoft 365 Family and Microsoft 365 Personal:

  1. Having multiple personalized email aliases for a single mailbox. For example, sales@mydomain.com, support@mydomain.com, and info@mydomain.com.

  2. Sharing your domain with people who aren't also part of your Microsoft 365 Family subscription. If you have already shared your domain with people through Outlook.com Premium, those email addresses will continue to work as long as you keep your domain connected to Outlook.com.

  3. Connecting new domains that aren't hosted by GoDaddy to Outlook.com.

If you've set up a personalized email addresses using one of these features in the previous Outlook.com Premium web portal, your settings won't change as long as you keep your domain connected to Outlook.com and maintain a Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

If you don't purchase a Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, you won't be able to send or receive email using your personalized email address. However, you won't lose any existing messages in your inbox.

If you don't transfer your domain to GoDaddy before it expires, you will lose access to the domain. You won't be able to use your personalized email address to send or receive email. However, you won't lose any existing messages in your inbox.

Go to https://who.is/ and enter your domain.

Tip: The domain expiration date is usually the same as your Outlook.com Premium subscription expiration date, visible in your Microsoft Account.

As long as you have a Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, you don't need to do anything else. Your email service won't be interrupted. If you currently share your domain with people through Outlook.com Premium, those email addresses will continue to work as long as you keep your domain connected to Outlook.com.
