Applies ToOutlook for Microsoft 365

When you open the classic version of Outlook, you might see a message asking you to make the switch to try new Outlook. You may even have tried new Outlook in the past, but switched back to classic. If that's the case, we encourage you to give it another try, and even if you've never tried it, now is a great time!

Since August 2024, new Outlook is Generally Available to everyone. We're pleased to offer you the latest features, intelligent assisted capabilities, and a modern and simplified design. You can tailor new Outlook to your style and do more with our new and improved app. Get more details about the features and benefits of new Outlook for Windows in Getting started with the new Outlook for Windows.

Try new Outlook now

If your version of classic Outlook shows it, select the Try the new Outlook toggle which is in the upper-right corner of your classic Outlook window.

Selecting the toggle will start the download of the new Outlook for Windows app to your device. This might take several minutes to complete. After the installation is complete, classic Outlook will close and the new Outlook for Windows will open, where you can sign in and choose to import your accounts and settings. You can switch back to classic Outlook any time.

Automatic switch to new Outlook

If you haven't yet selected the options presented to switch to new Outlook and you belong to one of the following customer segments, you’ll receive in-app notifications to switch to the new Outlook. You can choose to switch early on or may choose to experience the series of notifications before being automatically switched to the new Outlook

1. Small and Medium Businesses

Starting January 2025 and over the following months, if you are a classic Outlook user on the Current Channel with a Business plan, you will automatically be switched to the new Outlook after receiving a series of in-app notifications. You can choose to switch back to classic Outlook at any time, using the toggle in new Outlook. Both users and IT Admins can also turn off the automatic switch if not ready to try the new Outlook.

We will start to roll out to users with a Business Plan in the Beta Channel in November 2024 for validation and feedback.

If you are an IT admin, you can find the instructions to opt out of this experience in Opt out of new Outlook migration

2. Personal accounts

Starting October 2024 and over the next few months, if you haven't yet selected the options presented to switch to new Outlook and you're still using classic Outlook, we'll switch you automatically. This automatic switch will only occur for those using personal Microsoft accounts where the following is true:

  1. All email accounts in classic Outlook are personal Microsoft accounts where Microsoft is the provider (such as Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, or Live.com accounts).

  2. Select File > Office account. User Information must also be a personal Microsoft account where Microsoft is the provider.

  3. The license for classic Outlook must also be associated with a personal subscription product such as Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal.

The switch to new Outlook is meant to streamline your experience and will be a one-time switch aimed at helping you try the new Outlook experience and to share your feedback. If you're already receiving automatic Office updates there's nothing for you to do. The new Outlook for Windows app will automatically download and install onto your device. You'll continue to have the option to switch back using the New Outlook toggle or by selecting Go to classic Outlook from the Help tab on the new Outlook ribbon.

Note: If you're using classic Outlook with a work or school account with an Enterprise plan, or with a personal account where Microsoft isn't the provider (such as Gmail or Yahoo), you won't be automatically switched at this time, but we still encourage you to try new Outlook and share your feedback with us!

If you're not interested in trying the new Outlook for Windows just yet and don’t want to be a part of this one-time switch, in classic Outlook go to File > Options> General > New Outlook options and uncheck Automatically switch me to new Outlook

If you don't see this option, it means you're not currently eligible for an automatic switch to new Outlook for Windows at this time.

The try new Outlook toggle doesn't appear

In classic Outlook, you won't see the Try the new Outlook toggle if in addition to using a Microsoft account in Outlook, you also added a work or school account, but your admin has hidden the toggle, or if the account you're using isn't supported in new Outlook. For example, your account might be associated with a one-time purchase of Office or a standalone version of Outlook, or you're using a work or school account which doesn't support new Outlook.

If you feel you should have the new Outlook toggle, but you're still unable to find it, see Toggle out of the new Outlook for Windows
