This article discusses how using a phone that is not unified communications (UC)-enabled differs from using a UC-enabled phone. Receiving calls from Microsoft Lync 2010 communications software is similar to receiving calls with Lync 2010 for UC-enabled users.

What do you want to do?

Use video and sharing capabilities

To ensure audio quality in video calls, Lync presents the video and sharing portions only on the computer; the audio portion uses the desk phone. You cannot start or join video calls or sharing sessions by using a desk phone. Video calls and sharing sessions cannot support both UC-enabled and non-UC systems. All parties must use the same system. Depending on how your system is set up, you may be unable to conduct video calls. For more information, contact your support team.

Handle multiple calls

You cannot place more than two calls simultaneously, but you can have multiple people in the same call. You cannot place a second call if the first call is already on hold.

Join conference calls

Depending on how your system is set up, you may be able to choose whether to join a conference call by using the desk phone or another public switched telephone network (PSTN) number.

  1. Open Lync, and, in the Lync main window, click the Options button Lync Options button, and then click Phones.

  2. Under Join conference calls, in the Join meeting audio from drop-down list, click either Do not join audio or Lync 2010.

    Note:  RCC users cannot escalate an RCC call to an audio conference.

Forward calls

You can configure call forwarding so that incoming calls get forwarded to a different number or contact.

  1. In the Lync main window, click the Options button, and then click Call Forwarding.

  2. Click Forward my calls to.

  3. Click Voice Mail or My Delegates, and then specify a number. Or click New Number or Contact, and then specify a new number.

Answer a call

The following is true of call alerts when you use a non-UC phone.

  • You cannot click an incoming call alert to decline a call. To ignore or decline the call, just let it ring and go to voice mail.

  • You cannot manually choose to redirect an incoming call to voice mail.

  • You can reply to an incoming call with an instant message.

Know what’s available for Exchange Unified Messaging

If you use Exchange Unified Messaging (UM), note the following when you click the Phone icon in the Lync main window:

  • For Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, there is no Display voice mail options button below the dial pad.

  • For Microsoft Exchange 2010, you cannot call your voice mail from the Display voice mail options button below the dial pad.

Know what’s available for RCC only

Your organization might determine whether you use the desk phone exclusively for calls and online meetings. If this is the case, you won’t have these options and capabilities available to use.

  • Ringtones and Sounds options

  • Audio Device options

  • Recording in meetings

  • Viewing video
