Video formats that work in Microsoft 365 Video

Important: Office 365 Video is retired as of March 1, 2021. To use videos within your organization you should upload them directly to SharePoint sites, OneDrive for Business, Microsoft Teams, or Yammer communities. Office 365 Video is built on Azure Media Services. Therefore, Office 365 Video supports only the codecs and file formats that Azure Media Services supports. This article lists the video codecs, audio codecs, and video file formats that are compatible with Office 365 Video.

Supported video codecs

Office 365 Video supports the following video codecs:

  • H.264 (Baseline, Main, and High Profiles)

  • MPEG-1 (Including MPEG-PS)

  • MPEG-2 (Simple and Main Profile)

  • MPEG-4 v2 (Simple Visual Profile and Advanced Simple Profile)

  • VC-1 (Simple, Main, and Advanced Profiles)

  • Windows Media Video (Simple, Main, and Advanced Profiles)*


  • Grass Valley HQ/HQX

Supported audio codecs

Office 365 Video supports the following audio codecs:

  • AC-3 (Dolby Digital audio)

  • AAC (AAC-LC, HE-AAC v1 with AAC-LC core, and HE-AAC v2 with AAC-LC core)

  • MP3

  • Windows Media Audio (Windows Media Audio Standard, Windows Media Audio Professional, and Windows Media Audio Lossless)

Some uncompressed video file formats are also supported. For more information, see Supported uncompressed video formats.

Note: While all the above formats are supported, not all of them are accessible (for example, .wmv). Use the .mp4 format for the most accessible solution.
