You expect the Surface app to be secure and work properly. To meet this expectation, we collect diagnostic data when you use the Surface app with your Surface Earbuds or Surface Headphones. This data helps us find and fix problems, identify and mitigate threats, and improve your experience with the app and your headphones or earbuds. This data does not include your name, email address, or the content of your calls or music.

For more information, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Under your control

There are two levels of diagnostic data—Required and Optional.

Required

The minimum data necessary to help keep the Surface app secure, up to date, and performing as expected. Here are some examples of the data that is collected and sent to Microsoft:

  • The version of the Surface app that’s installed.

  • Whether pairing was successful or not.

  • Which device you connect in the Surface app.

  • When the Surface app is opened.

  • Whether firmware updates installed successfully on your Surface Earbuds or Surface Headphones.

  • Total amount of time you use your Surface Earbuds or Surface Headphones for music and calls.

Optional

Optional diagnostic data is data you can choose to provide. This data helps us make product improvements and provides enhanced information to help us diagnose and fix problems. If you choose to send optional diagnostic data, it’s collected and sent to Microsoft. Required diagnostic data is also included. Here are some examples of optional diagnostic data:

  • Which settings you use in the Surface app. For example, when you turn different settings on or off.

  • When you reset your device to the factory default settings in the Surface app.

You can turn optional diagnostic data on or off any time in the Surface app.
