Accessibility in classic Viva Engage

Note: This topic applies to features and functionality in classic Yammer. For more information on accessibility in new Yammer, see Accessibility in new Viva Engage.

Yammer, a social networking site to share information and discussions within your organization, includes accessibility features that make it easy for users with limited dexterity, low vision, or other disabilities to work with files. This means you can use keyboard shortcuts, a screen reader, or a speech recognition tool to work with Yammer.

Note: To learn how to set accessibility preferences and navigate Microsoft 365 for the web applications, refer to Set up your device to work with accessibility in Microsoft 365.

Get to know the Viva Engage layout

Yammer runs in your web browser. On the toolbar, near the top of the browser window, is the Microsoft 365 app launcher that contains the list of Microsoft services and Microsoft 365 for the web applications, including Mail (Outlook.com), Excel for the web, OneNote, and more. The toolbar also includes the link to the Microsoft 365 portal, as well as commands to get notifications, manage your options, get help, and sign out.

Under the toolbar are three panes of content. The top of the left pane contains controls for getting to your Yammer Home page, Inbox, Notifications, and Search box. Under those controls are the list of groups you follow or subscribe to, and links to discover or create new groups.

At the top of the middle pane are links for posting an update, poll, praise, or announcement, and beneath the active link is the text box and command for creating that post. Beneath the post is a thread of discussions for the group you’ve selected in the left pane. For each of your coworkers’ posts, you can follow links, like, share, or reply to a post.

Use controls in the right pane to invite other coworkers to join you on Yammer, to view recent activity, and to see who’s currently online.

For general information about navigating the menu, toolbar, and panes, see the Office Accessibility Center.

Navigate by using keyboard shortcuts

  • While in Yammer, you can press the question mark (“?”) anytime and get a pop-up window that lists Yammer keyboard shortcuts. Press the Esc key to close the window. For more details, read Keyboard shortcuts for classic Viva Engage.

  • To navigate in Yammer and to cycle through major screen elements, press Ctrl+F6 (forward) or Ctrl+Shift+F6 (backward).

  • To cycle within a screen element, press the Tab key (forward) or Shift+Tab (backward).

  • To select an item, press Enter.

  • To browse within menus or lists, press the Up Arrow key or Down Arrow key, and then, to make a selection, press Enter.

  • To exit a menu or mode, press Esc.

Yammer controls can be read by screen readers as you work in the application. You can use Narrator, the built-in screen reader in Windows, or a third-party tool, such as JAWS.

For information on using Yammer with a screen reader, including accessing Yammer, signing in, following groups, and participating in discussions, refer to Basic tasks using a screen reader with new Viva Engage.

Tip: As you cycle around the Yammer screen with Ctrl+F6, you encounter a pop-up that includes a link to “Tips for using Yammer with a screen reader (Office Help site).” Press Enter to open this Help topic.

You can also navigate in Yammer and participate in discussions hands-free with your voice control software. Go to Use Yammer with voice control.
