ISSUE

When recording audio in one version of OneNote, the audio cannot be played in another version of OneNote. You receive the following error.

Sorry, OneNote is having trouble playing this audio file.

SCENARIO

You record audio using OneNote for Windows 10. You then try to play that audio in OneNote 2016 and receive the error Sorry, OneNote is having trouble playing this audio file.

STATUS: WORKAROUND

  1. Right click the audio recording in OneNote.

  2. Select Save As....

  3. Choose Windows Media Player to listen to the file.
