Cortana works best when you sign in on a PC with a work or school account that you get through an organization you belong to. But if you don't have a work or school account, you can also sign into Cortana on any device using a Microsoft account.

A Microsoft account gives you access to Microsoft devices and services. It’s what you use to sign in to OneDrive,, Skype, and more. If you have an email address that you use to sign in to these or other Microsoft services, then you already have a Microsoft account.

Using your Microsoft account with Cortana lets you save and sync your information across devices. Follow the instructions below to sign in and troubleshoot your account.

Sign in to Cortana with your Microsoft account

  1. Open Cortana.

  2. Select Sign in and choose your Microsoft account if it's already listed.

  3. If it's not already listed, enter your Microsoft account information.

  1. Download Cortana from Google Play, then open the app.

  2. Enter your Microsoft account information on the sign-in screen.

  1. Download Cortana from iTunes, then open the app.

  2. Enter your Microsoft account information on the sign-in screen.

If you have trouble installing Cortana

First, check the system requirements on the app download page to make sure your device supports Cortana. If your device meets the requirements and you’re still having trouble installing, updating, or opting in to Cortana, try reinstalling the app, restarting your device, or resetting your Microsoft account password.

Note: Having trouble signing in? Learn more about your Microsoft account or get help.
