Characters may not be correctly displayed if files are opened by Windows 8's Windows Reader.

Characters may be missing or incorrectly displayed when you open a PDF file that does not contain embedded fonts with Windows Reader.

In addition, if you print such a PDF file with Windows Reader, incorrectly displayed characters will be printed.

If required fonts are embedded in the PDF file, Windows Reader correctly displays characters.
If required fonts are not embedded, Windows Reader checks if corresponding fonts exist in the fonts contained in Windows 8.
If corresponding fonts do not exist, Windows Reader uses fonts that can be displayed in Unicode instead; however, the language of the fonts to be used is not considered.
As a result, Windows Reader cannot correctly displayed characters if Windows does not use fonts of an appropriate language.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
