Concerned about exposure to ultraviolet light? Use the UV Tile to get a snapshot of the current UV level and set an exposure reminder to help protect yourself.
UV stands for ultraviolet, a type of light in the sun’s rays. Tanning lamps and tanning beds also use UV light. Prolonged, unprotected exposure to UV light can damage your skin and eyes—potentially resulting in health problems such as cataracts—weaken your immune system, and cause skin cancer by mutating DNA.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, between 2 million and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year. It’s also highly preventable with proper use of sunscreens and clothing coverage. Unfortunately, many people don’t take these precautions.
The UVI, or UV index, measures intensity of UV radiation from the sun on a scale of one to 11, with one being low risk and 11 being extreme risk.
Although you can’t see UV light, you can check the current UV level with your Microsoft Band. Here’s how:
|Step 1:||Press the power button.|
|Step 2:||On the Me Tile, swipe left and tap the UV Tile |
|Step 3:||Expose the UV sensor to the sun and press the action button. If your Band’s touchscreen is on the outside of your wrist, you may need to rotate your wrist so that the clasp of the Band faces up.|
|Step 4:||Your Band will analyze a sample of the UV level and display a reading (Extreme, Very High, High, Medium, Low, or None). |
If your Microsoft Band 2 detects exposure to UV light, it alerts you and gives you an option to set reminders if you continue to be exposed. You can set the duration that works best with your protection for the day.
Swipe left and tap Yes or No. To dismiss the warning, swipe right and tap Dismiss.
Here’s how to set a UV exposure reminder:

On the Me Tile, swipe left and tap the UV Tile
|Step 2:||Swipe left, and under Exposure Reminder, tap the icon to turn the reminder On.|
|Step 3:||Swipe left, and under Reminder Cadence, choose how often your Band will remind you about your exposure to UV light. Pick a longer cadence if you’re sufficiently protected with SPF and clothing and a shorter cadence if you want to be reminded to get out of the sun.|
Your Microsoft Health web dashboard tracks your UV exposure throughout the day and during workouts so you can monitor your exposure over time.
How do I track my UV exposure on the dashboard?

Open the Microsoft Health web dashboard

Sign in with your Microsoft account—the same account you use for the Microsoft Band app on your phone.

In the left menu, select Activities and select an activity.

Under the Summary tab, check UV exposure to see how much UV light you’ve been exposed to during that activity.

The UV reading is a snapshot of the level where and when you took the reading, not the cumulative total of your UV exposure.
