Event IDs 519 and 36 are logged and a server backup operation fails in Windows Server 2012 Essentials


Assume that you try to back up a server that is running Windows Server 2012 Essentials by using the Windows Server Backup feature. However, the backup operation does not finish, and an event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:
Event ID: 519
The backup operation that started at '?2012?-?04?-?08T07:00:03.915482900Z' has failed to back up volume(s) 'E:'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in the System log:
Event ID: 36
The shadow copies of volume E: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit.


Before the backup operation starts, a shadow copy is created on the source disk. This process requires additional disk space. If there is insufficient space on the disk, or if the shadow copy reaches its maximum size limit, the shadow copy creation process fails.


Check the available space on the source disk. If there is little available space, perform one of the following actions:
  • Move some data to another disk.
  • Delete the existing shadow copy data.
If the source disk has more than 10 percent available space, change the maximum size limit of the shadow copy to a larger value. We recommend that you set the maximum size limit to a value that equals 10% of the volume size. Or, you can store the shadow copy data on another disk.

Warning If you set the maximum size limit of the shadow copy to "unlimited," Windows Server 2012 Essentials stores up to 64 copies of each file that is located on the disk. This behavior provides better version control for each file. However, this behavior can consume a large amount of disk space. Make sure that you have enough free disk space before you set the maximum size limit to "unlimited."
