Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Integration Services (SSIS 2008) or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Integration Services R2 (SSIS 2008 R2) on a computer that is running Windows XP.

  • You install one of the following cumulative update packages to try to resolve the issue that is described in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2261403:

    • Cumulative update package 10 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

    • Cumulative update package 11 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

    • Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

    • Cumulative update package 4 for SQL Server 2008 R2

  • You run an SSIS 2008 or SSIS 2008 R2 package that contains a data flow task.

In this scenario, the issue that is described in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2261403 is not resolved. Additionally, the following warning message is logged in the package execution log:

Warning: Could not open global shared memory to communicate with performance DLL; data flow performance counters are not available. To resolve, run this package as an administrator, or on the system's console.

Cause

This issue occurs because the fix for the issue that is described in Knowledge Base article 2261403 contains a regression. This regression occurs on only a computer that is running Windows XP.
