PI: Error or Can't Start Windows After Changing Display

1.00
WINDOWS

SYMPTOMS

If you start Picture It! in a display mode less than 800x600 High Color,
the Display Not Optimized dialog may prompt you to increase your resolution
and color depth. If you allow Picture It! to make the change and you
restart Windows, you may not be able to start Windows or you may get the
error:

There is a problem with your display settings...
and the Display Properties dialog will be displayed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when your video configuration incorrectly reports that
a higher resolution or color depth is available than is actually available
for your video card and/or monitor. Picture It! suggests changes based on
the incorrect information.

RESOLUTION

There are two possible resolutions:

If you get the error and the Display Properties dialog, do the following:

  1. In the Display Properties dialog, click the Settings tab.
  2. Set the color palette to at least 256 colors. Set the Desktop area to
a resolution your video can support. (You might try 256 colors x 800 x
    600 or High Color x 640 x 480.)
  3. Click OK.
  4. When prompted to restart Windows, click Yes.
  5. When you run Picture It! again the Display Not Optimized dialog will
prompt you to optimize your display. Choose Leave As Is.
If you can't start Windows, do the following:

  1. Restart in Safe mode by pressing the F5 function key when you see
the message "Starting Windows 95" during the boot sequence. The
message is usually accompanied by a beep. When you are in Safe mode
the words "Safe mode" appear in all four corners of the screen.
  2. Right-click the Windows desktop and choose Properties from the menu.
  3. Follow steps 1 to 5 in the first resolution above.

MORE INFORMATION

If the restart fails, you may be able to avoid similar problems in the
future by consulting your video card manufacturer to verify that you are
using the correct video driver for your system and you have the latest
version of that driver.
