This article describes how to post Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) documents to an Internet service provider (ISP).
Starting the Web Publishing Wizard
To start the Web Publishing Wizard, use either of the following methods:
- Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Internet Tools, and then click Web Publishing Wizard.
- Right-click a file or folder, point to Send To, and then click Web Publishing Wizard.
Posting a DocumentTo post a document, follow these steps:
- In the Introductory screen, click Next.
- Verify or browse the path to select a file or folder for posting, and then click Next.
- Click your Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the list, click Next and skip to step 4. If your ISP is not listed, click New to create a new entry, and follow these steps:
NOTE: Some ISPs show login information screens for their services. For assistance in using these ISPs, contact the Technical Support for your Internet Service Provider (for example, if your Internet Service Provider is America Online [AOL], contact AOL Technical Support).
- After you click New, choose a name for the site and select a service provider to use. If you are posting to a commercial ISP, use the "<Other Internet Provider>" setting.
- Type the Web address or Internet address, and click Next.
Web Publishing Wizard uses two different transfer methods to post a set of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files to a Web server: Windows File Transfer (which uses universal naming convention [UNC] for file names) and the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
Web Publishing Wizard determines which protocol to use based on your location or the location of the Web server. Web Publishing Wizard prompts you for the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) when you set up the initial site configuration, and depending on the type of URL you enter, Web Publishing Wizard decides which transfer protocol to use.
- NetBIOS Names: If the URL you enter is similar to http://<servername>, Web Publishing Wizard attempts to make a universal naming convention (UNC) connection to the server when transferring your HTML documents.
- Fully Qualified Domain Names: If the Web address you enter is similar to http://example.microsoft.com, Web Publishing Wizard attempts to make a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) connection to the server.
- Choose the appropriate connection type to access your Web server, and then click Next.
You have two choices, Local Area Network (Intranet) or Dial-Up Networking (to access the Internet).
- The Wizard verifies the settings. Click Next.
- To publish, click Finish.
- When you are notified that your files were published successfully, click OK.
