How to host or join a multiplayer game in Links 2001

To host or join a multiplayer game, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use a direct connection

Host a game

  1. On the Startup menu, click Online, and then click Direct Connection.
  2. In the Connection Name box in the upper-left corner, type a name for your computer. The name is seen by other players in the game.
  3. Click Create a Game.
  4. When the Waiting to Begin Game dialog box appears, other players appear in the list of players.

    If you do not want a specific player to join your game, click the player name, and then click Reject.

    Note Each player must have the same game version as the host. Players who do not have the same version disappear from the list of players.
  5. When at least one other player has successfully joined, click Start Game to start game play.

Join a game

  1. On the Startup menu, click Online, and then click Direct Connection.
  2. In the Connection Name box in the upper-left corner, type a name for your computer. This name is seen by other players in the game.
  3. Click one of the following tabs to connect to a game on your network, or another computer directly:

    • Search Local LAN for Games
    • Use This IP Address
    • Modem to Modem
  4. Click a game in the game list, and then click Join a Game.

    The game begins when the host clicks Start Game.

    Note You may receive an error message similar to the following:

    Host Name has a newer (or older) version of Links 2001. The online game cannot start. An update for Links 2001 may be obtained at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.
    NoteTo download the Links 2001 update from the Microsoft Download Center, type Links 2001 in the Keywords (optional) box under Search for a Download, and then click Go.

    This problem occurs if the host of the game has a version of Links that is earlier or later than the version that you use.

Method 2: Use the Microsoft Gaming Zone

  1. Click Zone.com.
  2. When you are prompted to start your Web browser, click Yes.
  3. If you are not signed in to Microsoft Passport Network, click
    Sign-in in the upper-right corner of the Web Page.

    If you are not registered with Passport Network, click Get a Passport in the lower-left corner of the Microsoft Passport Network Sign-in dialog box, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process.
  4. When the MSN Gaming Zone Web page is available, click the All Games tab, and then click Links 2001.
  5. Click any room to join the current game in that room.

Method 3: Join a Links Tour

  1. On the Startup menu, click Online, and then click The Links Tour.

    When you are prompted to exit Links, click Yes.
  2. When the Links Tour Web page is available, click Sign in.
  3. If you are already a tour member, type your member credentials, and then click Log In.

    If you are not a tour member, click Join the Links Tour, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process.
  4. Click the tour you want to join, and then start playing.
