Assume that you upgrade from a stand-alone installation of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010, or you upgrade from a stand-alone installation of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. When you repair SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010, the repair process fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The process cannot access the file '<Path\FileName>' because it is being used by another process.
This issue occurs because Windows the SharePoint Services Timer service locks the SQL Server Express files after the installation process.
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
- Locate and then double-click Windows SharePoint Services Timer.
- In the Startup type list, select Manual or Disabled, and then click OK.
- Restart the computer, and then repair SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010.
