The prompt is not displayed to the correct user in Windows Server 2012 R2-based RDS server

This article describes an issue that occurs on a computer that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 by using Remote Desktop Services (RDS). A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • Many users connect to an RDS server.
  • A user accesses a certain website that requires a client certificate through RDS session.
  • A private key of the client certificate is protected by using strong private key protection.
  • The user tries to use the certificate, and expects a pop-up window (CredentialUIBroker.exe) to prompt him or her the password.
In this scenario, the pop-up window is displayed to a different RDS user. Therefore, the user who tries to use the certificate cannot enter the password, and cannot access the website.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, we have released a hotfix. Even though this issue has been observed only in Windows Server 2012 R2, the hotfix also applies to Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

Important If you install a language pack after you install this hotfix, you must reinstall this hotfix. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this hotfix. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.
