ACM Server - "Unable to connect to the database" error

After you install Audit and Control Management Server and create the database and web site using the ACM Server Configuration utility, you may encounter an error when you browse to the web site for the first time. The error will say "Sorry, something went wrong - Unable to connect to the database."

This occurs because the account that is used as the identity for the application pool of the ACM Server web site does not have the necessary privileges to login to the ACM Server database that was created.

Grant the appropriate privileges to the account that you configured as the Application Pool Identity so it has the necessary access to the database.

To do so:

1. Run SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the database server where the database was created.
2. Add a new login to the server Security, and specify the identity that you used for the ACM Web Server Application Pool.
3. Grant "public" Server Role to the login.
4. Click on "User Mapping", select the name of the ACM Server database, and grant "dbo" role for the database.

Alternately, if you do not want to grant the "dbo" role, you can grant the "db_datareader" and "db_datawriter" roles, and then grant access for the given login to execute stored procedures in the database using the following script, where "name_of_ACM_database" is the name of the database you created, and "account_logging_into_ACM" is the given login.

USE 'name_of_ACM_database'
create role sp_execute
grant execute to sp_execute
EXEC sp_addrolemember 'sp_execute', 'account_logging_into_ACM'
