Internet Connection Dropped Immediately After Connecting to ISP

When you attempt to establish a connection to your Internet service provider (ISP), the connection may appear to be successfully established, but after a few seconds the connection may be dropped. When this occurs, you may not receive any error message.

This behavior can occur if the IP Security (IPSec) policy for TCP/IP is set to Server (Request Security) or Secure Server (Require Security).

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Right-click the icon for your ISP, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Advanced, and then click the Options tab.
  5. Click IP Security, and then click Properties .
  6. In the Use this IP Security policy box, click Client (Respond Only) or Do not use IPSEC.
  7. Click OK or Close until all dialog boxes are closed.

This issue occurs because the client and server configuration are not compatible.

By default, the IPSec setting is set to Do not use IPSEC.
