On Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, doing a virtual machine configuration refresh will fail when a Highly Available Virtual Machine (HAVM) has a dedicated pass-through disk presented to it.

Summary

Consider the following scenario:

·         You have a multiple node failover cluster

·         You have a HAVM running on this cluster

·         You have a dedicated (non-shared) volume attached to the VM through Hyper-V manager

·         You attempt to refresh the machine configuration

When the above conditions are true, the machine configuration refresh will fail as the disk can’t be added to the cluster.

More Information

You can either remove the dedicated disk, or share the disk to the rest of the cluster nodes, and then the machine configuration refresh will succeed.
