Usage rules for games, music, movies and TV shows

Unless otherwise stated, capitalized terms shall have the same meanings as the same terms used in the Microsoft Services Agreement. Microsoft reserves the right to modify these usage rules at any time.

Authorised uses typically require the prior written consent of the copyright owner

All music, movies, TV shows, games, and associated content (“Digital Goods”) provided in the Windows Store and the Xbox Store are licensed and not sold. Your license is conditioned upon your compliance with the Microsoft Services Agreement, these usage rules, and any additional terms. Except as permitted below, you may not transfer or resell any Digital Goods, or any licenses to any Digital Goods provided through the Windows Store or the Xbox Store. If you sell any device containing Digital Goods obtained via these Stores, the purchaser of the device will not acquire any licenses or rights to use such Digital Goods.

Any reproduction, redistribution, transmission, display, sale, broadcast, public performance, rental or lending, modification, adaptation, sub-license or other use of the Digital Goods provided through the Windows Store and the Xbox Store, except as otherwise expressly permitted in the Microsoft Services Agreement or these usage rules, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of the copyright owner.

Usage rules for Groove Music Pass subscription service

A Groove Music Pass subscription allows you to stream or download from the service in your territory as many songs as you want on a subscription basis for a flat monthly fee.

Losing access

You might lose access to music you previously downloaded, streaming music and/or store credit if you:

  • Fail to pay the monthly fee.
  • Change your country or region.
  • Violate the Microsoft Services Agreement.

Go more than 30 days without signing into the Groove Music Pass service. For external devices, like an MP3 player, you might need to connect these devices to a computer and log into the Groove Music Pass service to maintain access to content.

Limits of use

  • Personal and non-commercial use only. Microsoft may terminate or suspend your subscription to the Groove Music Pass if we determine you're using the Groove Music Pass in a manner that isn't consistent with normal, personal use.
  • You may only stream content to one registered device at a time. See Microsoft.com/groove for the current list of compatible devices.
  • Your device’s capability to burn or export content doesn't modify rights of copyright owners of video, audio, image content.
  • You can't burn Groove Music Pass subscription content and/or playlists containing subscription content to a CD.
  • You can't use music obtained through a Groove Music Pass subscription as a ringtone on a mobile phone without the prior written consent of the copyright owner.
  • Number of registered devices:
    • You may download music on up to four (4) registered devices unless you subscribe to any other type of offer as provided by Microsoft from time to time.
    • Registered devices include compatible personal computers, Xbox consoles and portable devices.
    • If you have a prior Xbox Music Pass $14.99/month offer in the United States that includes 10 MP3 credits each month, you may download music on up to three (3) personal computers and up to three (3) other registered devices.

You can manage your list of registered devices for Groove Music Pass through the Groove Music Pass settings. You can remove devices once every 30 days. Microsoft may automatically de-register a device to make room for a new one.

Usage rules for music purchased separately from the Groove Music Pass premium monthly subscription service

  • Content purchased or acquired on a personal computer as part of a promotional bundle can’t be re-downloaded onto Xbox consoles.
  • For DRM-protected sound recordings:
    • Music can be kept after the subscription is terminated.
    • Music may be burned onto CDs for personal and non-commercial use.
      • Songs may be burned an unlimited number of times.
      • Identical playlists can be burned a maximum of seven (7) times.
    • Music can be authorised on up to five (5) personal computers and a reasonable number of registered devices for personal and non-commercial use.
      • You can remove registration from one computer to register another personal computer.
  • For DRM-free sound recordings:
    • Music can be kept after the subscription is terminated.
    • You’re authorised to make as many copies of recordings as are reasonably necessary for your personal and non-commercial use. Any other copying of music may constitute copyright infringement.
    • Music may be burned onto CDs for personal and non-commercial use.

Usage rules for Microsoft Films & TV service

  • If the terms on this site conflict with other terms of use, in the Microsoft Services Agreement (“MSA”) or otherwise, these terms control.
  • Movies & TV content may only be viewed and privately displayed for personal, non-commercial purposes on Authorised Devices. This limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right and licence is subject to the MSA, these usage rules, and if payment is required, is not effective until payment of the required fees.
  • You agree to stream or download each piece of video content only in territories within which Microsoft makes the relevant video content available to you for that purpose. Video content may only be streamed when streaming is authorised under the service.
  • Resolution of content purchased in high definition may vary based on content, hardware used and bandwidth of your Internet connection.
  • We may terminate or suspend your use of the service if we determine that you are using the service in a manner that isn’t consistent with normal, personal use.
  • For purposes of these usage rules for television and movie content: (i) ”Authorized Devices” are defined as personal computers, laptops, tablets, Xboxes and mobile devices, in each case that are compatible with the service and authorized by Microsoft; (ii) The definition of Authorized Devices may be expanded or contracted by Microsoft to include additional devices or remove devices that are no longer supported; and (iii) not all Authorized Devices are capable of receiving both streaming and downloads of video content.
  • Microsoft may use technologies to verify your compliance with the usage rules.

Usage rules for video offered on a retained licence basis (“Retained Rights Content”)

  • Personal Computers: You may only download an item of Retained Rights Content from the service on up to five (5) personal computers.
  • Xbox consoles:
    • After downloading Retained Rights Content to a download-capable Xbox console, you'll be able to view the content on that console without logging into the service. You'll also be able to download the Retained Rights Content onto a second download-capable Xbox console, but you must remain logged into the service to view the content on that second console. You may not copy or move the content from the second console.
    • You may only be logged in to the service via one Xbox console at a time.
  • Compatible mobile phones:
    • Where authorised by the service, you may download an item of Retained Rights Content from the service on up to three (3) compatible mobile phones.
  • Unless otherwise authorised by these usage rules, you may not copy or move the Retained Rights Content from its originally stored location.
  • Streaming:
    • To stream Retained Rights Content to an Authorised Device, you must be logged in to the service.
    • You may only stream an item of Retained Rights Content to one Authorised Device at a time.
    • You may stream up to three (3) different items of Retained Rights Content at any one time to Authorised Devices through the same account.
  • Season Pass. In some countries, we may offer Season Pass which includes currently available and future episodes of a TV programme season. If our agreements with the content owners cause us to deliver fewer episodes than planned at the time of your Season Pass purchase, we will give you a refund corresponding to the missing TV episodes on a pro-rata basis.
  • To allow for maximum licence availability, licences for Retained Rights Content downloaded on an Authorised Device may expire after 90 days if you have not signed in to the service from such Authorised Device during that period. If you are not then over your licence limit for such piece of Retained Rights Content, you can renew the licence for such content on such Authorised Device at any time by signing back in to the service from such Authorised Device.

Usage rules for video offered on a limited, time-based, video-on-demand basis (“VOD Content”)

  • VOD Content may only be viewed and privately displayed during the VOD Viewing Period.
  • This limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right and licence is subject to the Microsoft Services Agreement and these usage rules, and is effective on payment of the required fees.
  • VOD Viewing Period: You have fourteen (14) days from the date and time of your order to begin viewing the item of VOD Content ordered, and 24 hours to finish viewing such item once it begins, or as otherwise specified at the time of purchase.
  • Upon the expiry of the VOD Viewing Period, you’ll no longer be able to view the VOD Content without obtaining an additional licence.
  • VOD Content that has been directly downloaded to an Authorised Device may only be viewed on that device.
  • To stream VOD Content to an Authorised Device, you must be logged in to the service. Where authorised by the service, you may stream an item of VOD Content to more than one Authorised Device during the VOD Viewing Period; provided, however, that you may only stream an item of VOD Content to one Authorised Device at a time.
  • Once you have downloaded an item of VOD Content from the service on one Authorised Device, you won’t be authorised to stream or download it from the service to another device.
  • Unless otherwise authorised by these usage rules, you may not copy or move the VOD Content from its originally stored location.

Usage rules for digital games purchased or redeemed on Xbox Consoles

Xbox One Digital Game

  • Number of consoles and devices that can use games: You'll get a device license and a user license to every game you download from the Xbox Store. You can designate one console as your “Home” console and multiple users can select the same console for their Home console. The device license will automatically attach to your Home console, even if it’s not the console you're making the purchase from. As the purchaser of the game, the user license will be associated with your Microsoft account. For Xbox Play Anywhere games, see usage rules section below.
  • Users allowed to use games: Anyone can use your game on your Home console under your device license. When you log onto any other console with your Microsoft account, you may use all games to which you have a user license.
  • Changing Home console: You can change which console is your Home console up to 3 times during a one-year period (365 days). When you change Home consoles, all device licenses for digital content will move to your new Home console and will no longer be available on your old “Home” console.

Xbox 360 Digital Games

Number of consoles that can use a game, and users allowed to use it: You can use games on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to the game will also be granted to all users on the first console. If you transfer the game using a memory unit or other storage device, you'll also be able to use it on other Xbox 360 consoles, but you’ll need to sign in to Xbox Live with your Microsoft account on that console before accessing the game.

Usage rules for Xbox Play Anywhere games

Applicable to Xbox Play Anywhere Games:

  • Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games. Xbox Play Anywhere games can be purchased in the Xbox Store, the Windows Store, or via a digital code at participating retailers.
  • Participating games will be marked on www.xbox.com, in the Xbox Store, and in the Windows Store with the Xbox Play Anywhere icon. You can also go to www.xboxplayanywhere.com to see a full list of participating games.
  • Before you download an Xbox Play Anywhere game on your PC, you’ll want to make sure that your device meets the system requirements to run it. To verify that the game will work on your device, check the minimum system requirements from the game publisher using the system information for your device. Get more info.
Device usage:
  • When you buy an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game through the Xbox Store or the Windows Store, it’s yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. At any single point in time, you may only sign into the game on one Xbox One console or one Windows 10 PC. You cannot be signed into the same game on both an Xbox One console and a Windows 10 PC at the same time.
  • The Xbox One “Home” console usage rules stated above also apply to Xbox Play Anywhere games.
  • Downloadable content that you buy or earn for an Xbox Play Anywhere game that you own will also be playable on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
