Symptoms

When you try to install the update KB 961143 to resolve the authentication issue while browsing Companyweb, the update may fail to install with the following error:

An error in updating your system has occurred.
Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.

On analyzing the C:\Windows\KB961143.log file, you may see something similar:

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.
933.641: Message displayed to the user: An error in updating your system has occurred.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.
933.641: User Input: OK

Cause

This issue can occur if the DefaultAppPool is not running under the NetworkService account.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1.) Open IIS Manager

2.) Expand ServerName (local computer)

3.) Expand Application Pools

4.) Go to the properties page of DefaultAppPool

5.) Click on Identity tab

6.) Select the Predefined radio button, and select Network Service from the drop down box.

7.) Click Apply, Click Ok.

8.) Open a command prompt, and type IISRESET
