SUMMARY

Unable to change Visual style of Windows and buttons

SYMPTOMS

When you try to change the Visuals of Windows and buttons, you may experience an error or the changes might not take place.

CAUSE

This issue is due to a setting in the Group policy editor. Installing of some third party applications, may disable the option of changing the visual themes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the issue, change the setting in Group policy editor to "Not Configured" by following the steps mentioned below:
 
1. Click Start, Run.
2. Type "gpedit.msc" without quotes and click OK.
3. Navigate to the following option:
 
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display\Desktop Themes
 
4. Double-click "Prevent selection of windows and buttons styles" option.
5. Change the setting to "Not configured"
 
This will allow you to change the visual themes. Alternatively, you can make these changes from the registry. Follow these steps:
 
Navigate to the following registry key:
 
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
 
Look for the "NoVisualStyleChoice"
Double-click the Value Type: REG_DWORD
Change the Value data
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Windows and buttons Enabled
1= Windows and buttons Disabled
 
If you experience the issue still after changing the above mentioned settings, you can check the Theme service. If the service is not running, Windows reverts to the classic Windows styles. Perform the following:
 
1. Click Start, Run.
2. Type services.msc and click OK
3. Double-click Themes.
4. Set to Automatic under Startup
 
Once the service is started, Windows allows you to change the visual themes.
