MNK Pro: The computer stops responding when you press the volume keys

When you press either of the Volume Hot Keys on the Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, your computer may stop responding (hang).

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions are true:

  • You install the Microsoft IntellType Pro software while RealPlayer
    is running on the computer.
  • You are running a version of RealPlayer that is earlier than
    RealPlayer G2 version 6.

To resolve this issue, use the following troubleshooting methods in the order in which they are presented. If the issue continues to occur after you complete each method, proceed to the next method.

Reinstall IntelliType software after you perform a clean boot procedure

You may be able to resolve this issue by removing RealPlayer, performing a clean boot procedure, and then reinstalling the IntelliType Pro software. To do this, follow these steps:

Remove RealPlayer

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click RealPlayer.
  4. Click Add/Remove, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish removing RealPlayer.

Perform a clean boot procedure

To perform a clean boot procedure, use the appropriate steps for your version of Microsoft Windows.

For Microsoft Windows 98, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click
    System Information.

    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
    2. Click the program you want to quit, and then click End

Note If you receive a message that states that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again.
    3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.
  4. Disable any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the
