Symptoms

Assume that you enable Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) for a database in Microsoft SQL Server. Then, you back up the database by using the BACKUP DATABASE Transact-SQL statement that has a large value specified for the MAXTRANSFERSIZEoption.

When you try to get the backup header information of the TDE compressed backup by using the RESTORE HEADERONLY Transact-SQL statement, the statement takes longer than expected to finish.

Resolution

The fix for this problem is included in the following update for SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2017

Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2
