Symptoms

When you process DML operations on a table that has partitioning, and incremental statistics are automatically updated, an access violation occurs. Additionally, you receive the following error message in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS):

Msg 596, Level 21, State 1, Line 79
Cannot continue the execution because the session is in the kill state.
Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 79
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.


Note If you disable automatic update statistics, this error doesn't occur.

Resolution

This problem is fixed the following updates for SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2017

Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2

Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1
